Lahore, Dec 19(ANI): Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Secretary General I.A. Rehman has said that despite Pakistan being a signatory to the Universal Human Rights Declaration (UDHR), the situation regarding human rights in the country is unsatisfactory.

Rehman also emphasized that the situation was unsatisfactory in spite of the constitution of Pakistan having the provision of basic human rights to the people.

“There are two rights which we never gave to the people of Pakistan, one is the right to get married with one’s own choice, especially women and the second right is the right to change one’s religion,” The Daily Times quoted Rehman, as saying.

The Christian community has suffered most due to the country’s blasphemy laws, and recently, the laws were used as a pretext for attacking Christians in Gojra where six were horrifically burnt to death.

In the last 10 years, spurious blasphemy claims have been used as justification for killing more than 120 Christians.

The blasphemy laws condemn to death anyone who desecrates the Koran and the testimony of just one Muslim is sufficient to bring charges against another individual.

The result is the blatant misuse of the laws to settle personal scores or vendettas by making false claims. (ANI)
