Islamabad, Feb. 25 (ANI): Pakistans Ambassador to the United States, Hussain Haqqani, has said new foreign policies and strategic relations between Pakistan and the US should be based upon a shared worldview.
The US and Pakistan need to establish a strategic relationship based on a shared worldview, and President Obama and Vice President Biden understand that. They know what needs to be done, the Daily Times quoted him, as saying.
Criticizing previous US policies, Haqqani said Washington had always viewed Islamabad as strategic real estate, from which it can launch its own initiatives without paying much attention to the people of Pakistan.
We understand there are components in Pakistan that have gone extreme, but we have to protect our civilians, he said.
Haqqani emphasized on the importance of the Kerry-Lugar initiative that promises Pakistan annual non-military aid of 1.5 billion dollars, he said, it is an important building block of a partnership between the US and Pakistan, rather than a short-term military alliance.
Referring to Pakistans pivotal role in the international community, Haqqani also stressed that Pakistan is only six decades old and thus a relatively new country.
The government needs time to learn. None of Pakistans previous governments have been as inclusive and democratic. We are in the process of rebuilding the institutions of state, he said.
Speaking on the Sharia-deal, Haqqani said, The Government of Pakistan has not negotiated with the Taliban. It is an agreement with the indigenous people of Swat, who have long sought sharia law.
Our purpose is to drive a wedge between the Taliban and the indigenous people, he said.
The ambassador also said that India and Pakistan could work together for the development of both the nations.
India and Pakistan can work together in areas of education, energy, and cultural development. Pakistan may be at the crossroads of conflict, but it is also at the crossroads of opportunity, he said. (ANI)
