Gilani says he ‘can’t even think of making amendment in Pak’s blasphemy law’
January 18th, 2011 - 6:28 pm ICT by ANIDera Ghazi Khan, Jan 18(ANI): The Pakistan Government has no plans to amend the country’s controversial blasphemy law, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has categorically stated.
“Neither have we thought of it nor we are going to think of such a thing,” the Daily Times quoted Gilani, as saying in his address after inaugurating the sub-campuses of the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) and the Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) at the AIOU office.
However, he maintained that the government believed that no law should be misused.
Gilani said that those who were saying that a committee had been formed to amend the law were wrong, as no such committee was formed.
“I cannot even think of making an amendment in the blasphemy law,” said the PM.
However, a committee at the party level was formed to discuss the proposed legislations moved by MNAs, and this committee had rejected bringing any amendment in the law, he added.
Gilani said that those airing rumours of an amendment in the blasphemy law were merely wasting their time, and instead they should come together to help overcome challenges like unemployment, terrorism, extremism and sectarianism confronting the country, and should work for strengthening the institutions and the rule of law.
