Gilani rules out any “back-door solution” between Pak, US on Davis’ immunity row

Islamabad, Mar 8(ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has ruled out any ‘back-door solution’ to the case of double murder-accused CIA contractor Raymond Davis, for whom the United States is seeking diplomatic immunity from trial in the country.
“I stand with the people of Pakistan on the issue of American citizen Raymond Davis,” the Dawn quoted Gilani, as telling reporters after addressing a Seerat conference in Islamabad.
“No back-door solution will be solicited as Pakistan has expressed differences on the matter with the United States on the basis of principles,” said Gilani, in reference to his government’s stand that Davis’ immunity issue would be decided by the court dealing with the matter.
Davis was arrested by police after shooting dead two Pakistani on January 27 in Lahore, allegedly in self-defence.
Since then, the US has repeatedly called for the immediate release of the US official, who it says has been “unlawfully detained by authorities in Lahore.”
In February, US Senator John Kerry visited Pakistan to hold talks with national leaders aimed at resolving a bitter diplomatic row over Davis, and US President Barack Obama publicly spoke for the first time on the issue, insisting that Pakistan must recognize Davis as a diplomat and release him on the grounds of diplomatic immunity.
However, rebuffing the US demand so far, Pakistan has maintained that the matter is sub-judice and the legal process should be respected. (ANI)
