Geneva Convention prohibits arrest of foreign diplomats: Malik
December 13th, 2009 - 4:55 pm ICT by ANIKarachi, Dec.13 (ANI): Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said foreign diplomats cannot be apprehended in the country, as doing so would violate the Geneva Convention.
Interacting with media persons at the international airport here, Malik said international laws bars frisking or arresting any foreign diplomat who has a proper identity card.
“We are out to make friends not enemies,” The News quoted Malik, as saying.
Malik’s statement comes a couple of days after he claimed that foreign diplomats were supporting local terrorists.
The Interior Minister had said that some of the diplomats were assisting the militants, but they could not be arrested because of international laws.
He said that no terrorist came to Pakistan from abroad, and that all of them were locals getting assistance from neighbouring countries. (ANI)
