Foreign correspondents condemn J. Dey’s murder
June 12th, 2011 - 10:54 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 12 (IANS) The Foreign Correspondents Club (FCC) of South Asia Sunday condemned the murder of J. Dey, a highly-respected investigative journalist and crime reporter, in Mumbai and the recent killing in Pakistan of well-known mediaperson Syed Saleem Shahzad.
“At the time of their deaths, each were working on stories of great importance: Jyotirmoy Dey had exposed Mumbai’s powerful oil mafia and money-launderers, Syed Saleem Shahzad had revealed how Al Qaeda militants had infiltrated the Pakistan Navy,” the FCC statement issued here said.
“Both were providing a brave and vital service to their societies when they were killed for doing their jobs well,” it added.
Between 1992 and 2010, 27 journalists were killed in India, while in Pakistan Syed Saleem Shahzad was the 37th journalist murdered in the last 16 years.
“It is not enough for officials and politicians to condemn these killings. They must bring those responsible to justice, and recognize the essential role journalists perform,” the club’s South Asia executive committee demanded.
