European Union expresses concern over Paks political chaosMarch 14th, 2009 - 5:12 pm ICT by ANI
Brussels, Mar.14 (ANI): The continuous spate of political confrontation in Pakistan has further attracted the attention of the international community, with the European Union (EU) now expressing serious concerns over the issue.
We voiced serious concern at the current political instability in Pakistan, The Dawn quoted a senior EU diplomat, as saying.
Holding talks with the members countries of the union, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureishi said that Pakistan was seeking summit talks with the 27-nation bloc as a sign of the two sides increased engagement.
Diplomats, however, said that such a summit depended very much on the future political situation in the country.
If Pakistan further descended into turmoil, the bloc would certainly have second thoughts about such a high-level meeting, a diplomat said.
Strategists were of the view that the current political chaos in Pakistan is distracting its attention from the real threat of militancy.
They said that the crisis is also hampering the government from dealing with the sharp economic downfall.
The EU team was led by Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg. Swedish Foreign Minister, Carl Bildt and European External Relations Commissioner, Benita Ferrero-Waldner were also in the team. (ANI)
