EU has concerns over security issuesJanuary 8th, 2008 - 3:36 pm ICT by admin
Islamabad, Jan 8 (ANI): The head of the European Union (EU) Observer Mission Michael Gahler, has expressed concern over the security of mission members during his meeting with Pakistan Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz on Monday.
The head of the EU monitoring team has expressed concern over security of the observers during their stay in Pakistan because of worsening law and order in the wake of Benazirs assassination, the Daily Times quoted ministry sources, as saying.
They said Gahler has requested for advanced security of EU election observers in his meeting with Nawaz.
Nawaz briefed Gahler on the arrangements for free, fair and peaceful elections in the country.
Nawaz also told Gahler that his Ministry is discussing the matter with Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Election Commission (EC) and some other departments to ensure the security of EU observers.
We have discussed law and order concerning the elections with the interior minister. We have requested him to provide us security during our stay in the country, Mathisas Eick, the EU Observer Mission press and public outreach officer, said.
Gahler said some more observers would also come from Brussels to Pakistan at the time of elections. (ANI)
