Drone attack a violation of sovereignty: Pakistan
January 13th, 2012 - 3:26 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Islamabad, Jan 13 (IANS) Pakistan has condemned a US drone strike that left four people dead, saying it was a violation of its sovereignty.
“Pakistan has a clear position on drone attacks and it has disadvantage over tactical benefits,” foreign office spokesman Abdul Basit said Thursday.
The US, which suspended drone strikes in Pakistan following last November’s NATO attack that left 24 Pakistan Army soldiers dead, has now resumed the attacks. The latest strike Tuesday night killed four suspected militants in North Waziristan. Three of the dead were foreign nationals.
Basit said these attacks also raise the question of violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty adding that the this could not be condoned, Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
After the Nov 26, 2011 strike in Mohmand Agency, an angry Islamabad barred the passage of NATO supplies through the country and boycotted an international conference in Bonn that focussed on the future of Afghanistan.
It also directed the US to vacate the key Shamsi airbase that was used to launch drone strikes.
