Don’t expect UN enquiry into Benazir’s assassination to be a ’smoking gun’: Munoz

Islamabad, July 18 (ANI): Nothing substantial should be expected from the UN Commission inquiry into the assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, as it is learnt that the Commission would not be revealing the names of the perpetrators.
Addressing a news conference here, the head of the commission, Heraldo Munoz clarified that the Commission’s report would not mention any names of perpetrators of the assassination as its mandate was just to examine the facts and circumstances in which the killing was carried out.
“Our report would not be a smoking gun. We would not tell the names of perpetrators,” said Munoz, Chilean Ambassador to UN.
Munoz said the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also considers the commission’s work as one of the top priorities on the UN during the next few months.
“We are very much aware that this is no ordinary assignment. We have no preconceived ideas about what the outcome of our work will be. We intend to do serious and solid work that may throw light on the issues and offer a better understanding of the facts and circumstances,” The News quoted Munoz, as saying.
When enquired that whether former President General Pervez Musharraf would also be quizzed during the probe, he said Musharraf might have some important information that he could share which can throw light on the unsolved mystery behind the former premier’s assassination. (ANI)
