Dabaoen Temple’s miniature stupa may hold Buddha’s remains
June 13th, 2010 - 1:06 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, June 13 (ANI): A miniature stupa excavated from the Dabaoen Temple in Nanjing, China may contain the relics of the Buddha.
Archaeologists began excavations at the Dabaoen Temple in 2007.
In November 2008, a stupa-shaped casket was unearthed. This is believed to be one of the 84-thousand stupas that King Asoka distributed across the world after storing the relics of Sakyamuni.
The stupa stands 1.8 meters tall and is bejewelled with more than four-hundred-and-fifty diamonds, reports English.news.cn.
It is the largest of its kind unearthed in China so far.
Archeologists had earlier discovered a stele with an inscription that says the miniature stupa in the Dabaoen Temple contains a gold mini-coffin wrapped by a silver coffin cover.
The gold coffin is believed to hold Sakyamuni’s relics. (ANI)
