Court issues notice to Pak Govt on application against ’special facilities in jail’ for Davis
March 1st, 2011 - 11:55 am ICT by ANILahore, Mar 1(ANI): The Lahore High Court has issued a notice to the Pakistan Government on an application challenging the facilities being given to double murder-accused CIA contractor Raymond Davis in prison.
LHC Chief Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry directed Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Naveed Inayat Malik to file the government’s reply until March 14.
Barrister Javed Iqbal Jaffery had moved the application in the main petition filed against immunity to Davis, the Daily Times reported.
In his application, Jaffery alleged that the accused had been enjoying the facilities of mobile phone, internet and an extraordinary tight security in violation of the jail manual.
Pakistani media has also reported that special treatment is being meted out to US national Davis in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail.
However, US Consul General in Lahore Carmela Conroy dismissed these reports last month, saying: “Ray is being treated like a regular prisoner. He has no access to a television, telephone, internet or any other electronic devices, and cannot communicate directly with his family.”
Davis was “being held under the same conditions as a Pakistani would be, in such a high-security facility. He sleeps on a foam mattress on a concrete pad,” the US Embassy quoted her, as saying in a press release
According to the statement, Davis has regular consular access visits- as all foreign prisoners are entitled under international and Pakistani law- and has received “only basic clothing, groceries, medicine and toiletries.” (ANI)
