Butt and Bari asked to explain IPL fiasco
January 22nd, 2010 - 7:46 pm ICT by IANSKarachi, Jan 22 (IANS) A parliamentary panel has summoned Pakistani cricket officials Ijaz Butt and Wasim Bari to explain why Pakistani players were allowed to register for the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction without assurances that “they would not be humiliated”.
The Standing Committee on Sports of the Pakistan National Assembly has asked Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Butt and chief operating officer Bari to come for a hearing Feb 3.
None of the 11 Pakistani players, including all-rounder Shahid Afridi, fast bowlers Umar Gul and Mohammad Amer and batsman Umar Akmal, failed to find favour with the IPL franchisees, causing uproar in Pakistan.
India and the Indian cricket board were accused of deliberately humiliating the Pakistani cricketers, who are now the 20Twenty champions.
“We have asked Butt and Bari to explain how they cleared our players to enter the IPL bid without getting proper assurance that they would not be humiliated,” said Jamshed Dasti, the committee chairman.
