Britain readies new strategy to deal with Pak based ‘crucible of terrorism’April 27th, 2009 - 6:05 pm ICT by ANI
London, Apr.27 (ANI): Terming the lawless mountainous tribal region along the Pakistan-Afghanistan as a ‘crucible of terrorism’, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has unveiled a new strategy to counter the terror threat emanating from the region.
Brown, on a surprise visit to Afghanistan, referred the region as a “breeding ground for terrorism” and said that any plan to thwart the growing threat from the Taliban must be implemented with of the local forces.
Brown said that the stability of the region was directly related to peace in Britain, as almost all the terrorist activities which the country has witnessed in the past were planned in this very breeding ground.
“We know that three-quarters of the terrorist activities that happened in Britain arise from the areas around here. The safety of people on the streets of Britain is immediately being safeguarded by the action being taken here. Our strategy for dealing with this breeding ground of terrorism will mean more security on the streets of Britain.” The Telegraph quoted Brown, as saying.
Brown informed that the blueprint of the strategy, which his designed to address the worsening security situation of region, would be tabled before Parliament later this week.
Addressing the troops at the Camp Bastion in the Helmand province, where majority of the 8,300 British contingent are stationed, Brown said it was very important to contain the terrorism in Afghanistan as well as Pakistan.
“There is a chain of terrorism that goes from here round to the streets of Britain. That’s why it’s absolutely important that while we have made progress on Afghan elections, democratic government, six million children in education, hospitals as well as roads and infrastructure for the people of Afghanistan, that we defeat international terrorism and hold it back from here in Lashkar Gar, here in Helmand province, but also on the other side of the border in Pakistan,” he said.
