Islamabad, Apr.25 (ANI): Speaking for the first since he was indicted in the US enquiry commission’s report over the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, who was the security advisor of the slain leader, has said that Bhutto’s security was the responsibility of the then Musharraf government.

Interacting with a visiting Indian media delegation, Malik said it was wrong to say that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had not arranged for proper security during Bhutto’s election rally at Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh, where the she was killed in a gun and bomb attack on December 27, 2007.

” It is totally irrelevant as to whether the PPP had the required security on the day of her assassination or not. The only thing the party workers could do was act as human shields… which they did,” The Daily Times quoted Malik, as saying.

He stressed the government was examining the UN commissions report, and that it was committed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The UN fact finding team’s report had blamed Malik and the incumbent presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar and other officials of leaving injured Bhutto behind and fleeing away from the crime scene.

” Ms Bhutto was left vulnerable in a severely damaged vehicle that was unable to transport her to hospital by the irresponsible and hasty departure of the bullet-proof Mercedes Benz, which as the back-up vehicle, was an essential part of her convoy,” the report had stated. (ANI)
