Dharamsala, July 17 (IANS) An 18-year-old Tibetan monk self-immolated himself in northeastern Tibet in China Tuesday, the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) said here.

With this incident, a total of 44 people have reportedly killed themselves since 2009 in Tibet.

Lobsang Lozin, a monk of Gyalrong Tsodun Kirti Monastery in Bharkham, set himself afire shouting slogans. He died on the spot, the CTA said in a statement.

The people who have reportedly killed themselves were protesting Beijing’s “repressive policies” and demanding the return of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama to his homeland, it said.

The CTA has already clarified that the Dalai Lama has always discouraged drastic action.

The Dalai Lama fled Tibet along with many of his supporters and took refuge in India when Chinese troops moved in and took control of Lhasa in 1959.
