There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
Farahi has been serving as consul general in Peshawar since 2001 and was to assume his new post of Afghan envoy to Pakistan, NNI reported.
The Afghan government sent his credentials to Pakistan’s foreign ministry a month ago and was awaiting the acceptance.
There were no security guards with the envoy at the time of the attack, witnesses said.
The NNI quoted the police as saying that they were not informed about his visit to Peshawar.
