Abolish degree requirement for contesting polls: Pakistani panel
November 18th, 2009 - 6:31 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Islamabad, Nov 18 (IANS) A Pakistani parliamentary panel has recommended that a constitutional provisional that requires candidates contesting elections to have at least a college degree be amended.
This can be done by amending articles 62 and 63 of the statute, the Constitutional Reforms Committee said at its meeting here Tuesday.
Online news agency quoted sources as saying that the meeting reviewed in detail the two articles and sought the opinion of various parties on them.
A majority of the members proposed relaxations in the two articles because most of those who are otherwise eligible to contest cannot do so.
Committee chairman Raza Rabbani told the meeting that he wanted to dispose of the issue as soon as possible. “However, a constitutional matter is very sensitive and we do not want to take any decision in haste”, he added.
