9-day traffic jam in China stretches over 100 km!
August 23rd, 2010 - 5:26 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, Aug 23 (ANI): Being stuck in a jam for three hours doesn’t sound bad, for it could have been much-a nine-day long traffic jam in China cause by maintenance work and broken down cars stretched for over 100 kilometres.
It all began on August 14 on the Beijing-Tibet Expressway between Beijing and Huai’an when thousands of Beijing-bound coal and fruit trucks jammed the roadway, reports Chinese daily newspaper The Global Times.
According to news.com.au, maintenance work on the nearby National Expressway 110, which had suffered damage from heavy vehicles, was the main reason for the choke.
What’s more, the jam is expected to last for almost a month with maintenance work on the National Expressway 110 not due to be finished until September 13.
But there was some upside to the whole fiasco.
Residents who live along the roadway were reportedly profiting from the traffic jam, selling food to stranded drivers at sky-high prices.
“Instant noodles are sold at four times the original price while I wait in the congestion,” one driver told the Global Times.
“Not only the congestion annoys me, but also those vendors.”
Some suggested having concerts to keep the stranded entertained. (ANI)
