Rawalpindi/Lahore, June 18 (IANS) At least 30 explosive-laden vehicles have entered Punjab as well as the garrison town of Rawalpindi adjacent to the Pakistani capital Islamabad from the tribal areas of the country, a media report Thursday said.
The intelligence agencies had warned of the entry of the 30 explosive-laden vehicles, Online news agency reported, quoting a private TV channel.
“The suicide bombers can hit sensitive installations in Punjab. On the other hand, Inspector General of Police Punjab Shaukat Javed has released details of vehicles, which can be used in terrorist activities,” the channel added.
Security has been augmented in Punjab, especially at recreational sites, mosques and mausoleums around Punjab.
The Pakistani military is currently engaged in a major anti-Taliban offensive in three districts of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) that entered their 53rd day Thursday.
The military says some 1,500 Taliban have been killed in the operations, which have triggered a rash of suicide bombings and attacks, including at a five-star hotel and at the residence of the regional army commander in NWFP capital Peshawar.
Peshawar’s international airport was temporarily closed Wednesday apparently because the the authorities feared it could be targeted. The airport was reopened Thursday on the orders of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.
