26 killed in two drone strikes in Pakistan (Lead)

Islamabad, June 27 (IANS) At least 26 people were killed Monday in two drone strikes in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region bordering Afghanistan, a media report said.

In the first strike, 12 people died when four missiles were fired at a vehicle suspected to be carrying militants in Wana area of South Waziristan, Xinhua reported.

The second strike launched late Monday night in Mantoi area of South Waziristan targeted two houses, killing 14 people.

At least 344 people, most of whom believed to be militants, have been killed in about 40 drone strikes in 2011.

Drones have sometimes mistakenly killed innocent Pakistani civilians, leading to protests by the government.
