23 militants surrender in Pakistan
April 22nd, 2011 - 3:03 am ICT by IANSIslamabad, April 22 (IANS) A total of 23 militants have surrendered to security forces in the restive northwest tribal region in Pakistan, officials said.
A grand “jirga” (community meeting) of Mohmand tribes was held in Mohmand region in which the militants surrendered and promised to lead a peaceful life and abide by the law of the land in future, Xinhua reported citing the official APP news agency.
The militants who belonged to different areas of Bajaur tribal region bordering Afghanistan were wanted since the past three years for their involvement in anti-state activities.
Officials said that with the surrender of these militants, the number of total surrendered militants in the region in the past three years reached 2,000.
Tribal elders at the meeting pledged that no anti-social elements would be tolerated in the region and complete assistance and support would be provided to the security forces in maintaining law and order.
