22 killed, over 100 wounded in Faisalabad CNG station explosion
March 8th, 2011 - 2:48 pm ICT by ANIFaisalabad, Mar 8(ANI): At least 22 persons were killed and over a hundred injured in an explosion at a compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station situated near an intelligence agency’s office in the Pakistani city of Faisalabad on Tuesday.
According to sources, a heavy explosion occurred as a boiler of a CNG station exploded, Samaa TV reports.
An office of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and a local gas station were severely damaged in the blast.
Police have cordoned off the area after the incident, and the relief work is underway.
“At the moment we can’t say anything about the nature of the blast,” commissioner Tahir Husain told Geo News.”We have taken out around 13 bodies from the blast site,” he said, adding, “There are some people trapped under the building rubble. We have deployed our cranes and machinery to rescue them very soon.”Husain also said the “probability is very strong” that the blast was caused by a militant attack, but cautioned that investigations were “still in the formative phase.”
“We will be able to say something after investigations,” he added. (ANI)
