Kabul, June 9 (Xinhua) At least 20 Taliban insurgents have been killed in an operation carried out by the Afghan and International troops in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Patika, the police said Monday. The fighting between the government troops and the insurgents took place late Sunday near the Gardisari district.
“A group of Taliban militants were planning to attack government installations in the province but security forces have foiled their plan,” provincial police chief, Asmatullah Alizai, said.
“Afghan troops backed by the International forces attacked their positions late Sunday, killing 20 insurgents. Their group commander, Mullah Qalam, was also killed on the spot,” Alizai told Xinhua.
Taliban has not made any comments on the incident so far. More than 1,500 people have been killed in insurgency related conflicts so far this year in Afghanistan.
