World Space Week begins with ‘Sputnik’
October 4th, 2010 - 9:18 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 4 (IANS) Sky gazers and students Monday gathered at the Russian Center here for the screening of “Sputnik” - a movie on the Russian space mission - marking the start of the week-long World Space Week (WSW).
Skywatches, painting, quiz competitions, activities and workshops are also planned all through the week to celebrate the WSW.
Astronomicans, the amateur wing of the Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE) will be hosting an event each day during the week to bring astronomy to the public.
“Individuals and amateur astronomers will be hosting astronomy events such as skywatches, astronomy painting and quiz competitions, activities and workshops across the country,” said C.B. Devgun of the SPACE.
The World Space Week is an annual international astronomical event organised by the United Nations General Assembly from Oct 4-10. The objective is to celebrate the contributions of space science and technology for the betterment of the human condition.
