Work on BrahMos’ hypersonic version on
October 10th, 2011 - 12:45 am ICT by IANSTiruchirapalli (Tamil Nadu), Oct 9 (IANS) Several Indian and Russian companies are working to develop components for the proposed hypersonic variant of Brahmos stealth missile, said a top defence official Sunday.
The missile will travel at Mach 7 - seven times the speed of sound.
“A new engine has to be developed alongwith electronics and other subsystems that can withstand the vibrations. Several Indian and Russian companies are working on the design and development of the components and subsystems,” A.Sivathanu Pillai, CEO and MD, BrahMos Aerospace said here.
He said the Bangalore based Indian Institute of Science and Moscow Aviation Institute are researching on the development of components for the hypersonic missile.
BrahMos, a supersonic two stage/engine stealth missile, is a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroeyenia.
