Two new elements added to Periodic table
June 9th, 2011 - 7:35 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, June 9 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Two new elements have been added to the periodic table. Scientists added the two elements and made it public this week, in an announcement that has sent excitement through the scientific world. The two elements are yet to be named but they have been given placeholder names.
The first element is referred to as element 114 with the other element named as ‘Element 116′. Scientists call element 114 “ununquadium” and element 116 is called “ununhexium.” Substantive names are expected to be given to the elements once scientists have been able to come up with some.
Already some names have come forward. Scientists are considering naming one of the elements after the Russian nuclear scientist Georgy Flyorov. The proposed name for the element is flerovium. Another suggestion being considered is naming the element after the Russian capital Moscow. Moscovium have been presented to the scientists to consider for the name of one of the elements.
The periodic table has 94 naturally-occurring elements with all the rest being manufactured in the lab. The discovery of the two elements is as a result of years of experiments. The experiments sometimes involve smashing the nuclei of atoms to come up with new elements.
