Study suggests that ichthyosaurs might have been food for the Sea monster Kraken
October 11th, 2011 - 11:04 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLos Angeles, Oct 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new study suggests that ichthyosaurs, which were previously thought to be on top of the ancient sea food chain, might have been a meal for another sea monster. The researchers chose to call the mythological creature kraken.
Though the researchers do not have any physical evidence to back their claim, lead researcher Mark McMenamin claims that the theory is the only logical explanation to the skeletal remains of an ichthyosaurs which was found at a park. The skeleton had scratches and scientists have been trying to solve the mystery since then.
The findings of the research were presented to the Geological Society of America in Minneapolis on Monday during the annual general meeting.
McMenamin maintains that the krakens had soft body so it is unlikely that their remains will be available to be presented as evidence. He is aware that other scientists will criticize him for presenting a work without evidence but he promises that he has a strong case to back his claim.
On how the animals fed of the ichthyosaurs, McMenamin explained that, “We think that this cephalopod in the Triassic was doing the same thing… It was either drowning them or breaking their necks.”
