Study: Dogs are smarter than cats
November 23rd, 2010 - 10:10 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Nov 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A group of scientists have concluded that contrary to the popular belief, dogs are in fact more intelligent than cats.
The study was conducted by researchers from Oxford University. The researchers spent time studying the brain size of more than 500 species including fossil remains. The researchers then mapped the evolution of the brain of the species over the last 60 million years.
After the study, it was found that there was a strong link between the size of the brain of a mammal in relation to its body and the sociability of the animal. It was found that animals that were more sociable had larger brain size in relation to the body than those that are not sociable. That means such animals like whales, dogs and dolphins tend to have relatively larger brain that domestic cats, tigers, rhinos and other solitary animals.
The study which was published in the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences helped scientists to fully understand the real timeline of brain development during the evolution. The scientists for instance discovered that monkeys had the most expanded brain over the period of evolution. Horses, dolphins, camels and dogs followed in that order in the level of development of the brain over the years.
