Bangalore, Jan 11 (IANS) Leading IT services firm Sify Technologies Ltd Wednesday unveiled an undersea cable landing station in Mumbai for providing communications links to telcom service players and enterprises in the Asia-Pacific region, West Asia and Africa.

“With capacity to land additional submarine cable systems, our robust connectivity will open the market for our managed enterprise and data centre services in the Middle Eastern market,” Sify chief executive Raju Vegesna said in a statement here.

The operational readiness of the station makes the Gulf Bridge International (GBI) the first to land its sub-sea cable system in the Indian sub-continent

GBI is the Middle East’s first privately-owned submarine cable system linking Gulf countries with the rest of the world.

“The cable system will provide telecom operators and communications firms in India and the world over, choice and resilience. We look forward to play a larger role in the communications revolution in the Asia-Pacific region, Middle East and Africa,” Vegesna said.

With a capacity of 10 terabits per second on certain cable sections, the system is designed to accommodate the rapid growth in voice and rich media traffic (internet, telephony and video) originating from and terminating in the Middle East as well as the African and European markets.

Sify also signed a landing party agreement with Mena Submarine Cable System SAE, a licensed telecom operator in the Egypt, to service more African and European countries.

“We forecast a growing demand for international bandwidth between the Middle East and Asia, driven by the favourable demographics and increasing economic strength in both regions. Sify’s landing station and our cable will become the leading gateway between these markets,” said GBI chief executive Ahmed Mekky in the statement.
