New York, Apr 15 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Scientists have chanced upon a mineral that have not been seen before. The new mineral has been named “Wassonite” and it is one of the most significant discoveries ever made.

There are currently about 4,500 minerals on the official list of the International Mineralogical Association. The new mineral was discovered by a group of NASA scientists led by Keiko Nakamura-Messenger.

The mineral was found in the meteorite Yamato 691 enstatite chondrite. The meteorite was discovered in December of 1969 by members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. The meteorite was found at the Yamato Mountains in Antarctica.

The discovery prompted scientists from Japan and the United States to commence searches for other meteorites. So far the search has yielded about 4,000 specimens in the area. The researchers are still working to unravel several minerals that they have found.

At the location where they found the mineral, the scientists also found several other minerals which have not been seen before. Wassonite was discovered by the scientists with the help of NASA’s electron microscope. Scientists say understanding minerals helps to understand the mysteries surrounding formation and composition of earth.
