President congratulates Ramakrishnan

New Delhi, Oct 7 (IANS) President Pratibha Patil Wednesday congratulated Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, the Indian-born scientist who has shared this year’s Nobel Prize for Chemistry with two other researchers.
The president has said she is very proud to hear of the news and is happy that Professor Ramakrishnan’s pursuit of understanding the structure and function of the ribosome has been recognised, a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement said.
The president hopes that the work will one day help in bringing better cure for those who suffer from incurable bacterial infections, it said.
Ramakrishnan, now a US citizen and associated with MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, Britain, was named for the $1.42 million award along with American Thomas A. Steitz and Israeli Ada E. Yonath for their “studies of the structure and function of the ribosome”.
