PM salutes Nobel laureate ‘Venki’ Ramakrishnan for good science

January 3rd, 2010 - 3:58 pm ICT by IANS ( 11 comments )

Manmohan Singh Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 3 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday saluted the latest Indian Nobel laureate Venkatraman (Venki) Ramakrishnan for his creativity, talent and commitment to good science.
“All Indians felt proud that an Indian-origin scientist, who earned his early spurs in India, was a recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry,” Singh said, inaugurating the 97th Indian Science Congress here.

Singh also endorsed Ramakrishnan’s recent comment that Indian scientists needed greater autonomy from red tape and local politics.

In this context, the prime minister lamented that red tape, political interference and lack of proper recognition of good work led to regression in Indian science from the days of another Indian Nobel laureate C.V. Raman and other pioneering scientists in the past.

Though Ramakrishnan is presently in India, camping at the renowned Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, organisers of the premier science event - Indian Science Congress Association, hosts Kerala University and the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) did not invite him for the annual science summit.

“We were not aware about him being still in the country or his itinerary. We knew through media reports that he was in Mumbai and Chennai recently. Had we known that he was in Bangalore, we would have certainly persuaded him to come here,” a senior varsity official told IANS on the margins of the conference.

Ramakrishnan, 57, though a US citizen, was born at Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu and graduated in science from Baroda University in 1971 and did Ph.D in physics from Ohio University in the US in 1976.

He is currently a senior scientist and group leader at structural studies division, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, at Cambridge in Britain.

Ramakrishnan was awarded the Nobel Prize jointly by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences ‘for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome’ along with Thomas E. Steitz of the US and Ada E. Yonath of Israel.

A ribosome translates the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) code into life.

  1. Jay Bharat Says:

Nobel Quality Scientists like Dr. Ramakrishnan could not get position in Tamil Nadu where the Hitler like DMK has squeezed out his Brahmin community.

  2. Vasanthakumar Says:

Shame on you Jay bharat. This is quite mean comment.

Venki is grown up in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Venki got the award due to his work and interest not due to his brahmin lable.

  3. Jay Bharat Says:

You have been thoroughly brainwashed by DMK, Vasantkumar.
Dr Ramakrishnan grew up and went to school in Chidambaram, which is not a part of Gujarat. Thanks to the Party of Brahmin hating, RAVANAS aka DMK, Dr Ramakrishnan had to flee to Vadodhra and then to USA. You should also know that ALL the Nobel prize winners from TN, SIR CV RAMAN, DR. Chandrasekhar, DR
Ramakrisnhnan are ALL Brahmnas. So Much for India’s policy of brain gain. At this rate intolerant TN will soon become like Pakistan.

  4. Vasanthakumar Says:

    So ill informed Mr. Jaybharat.
I know you are a tamil brahmin and want to associate with Nobel laureates with your caste name. I am curious to know you are a iyer or iyengar.
    C.v raman and S.chandrasekar are iyers(relatives).
    Ramakrishnan is a iyengar.
Please dwell more on their “sub caste” to associate more.

First I want to quote World greatest noblest of all Albert Einstein.
” If my theory of relativity is proven correct, Germany will claim me as a German and France will say I am a man of the world. If it’s proven wrong, France will say I am a German and Germany will say I am a Jew”

Do you know noble history ? Jews are the number 1 in getting nobel prize. Do any one accept Jews are superior than brahmins ?

And with no ill respect to anyone i want you know that classical sanskrit born in Pakistan (Kandhahar) not in indian. Banini the father of sanskrit is born in Kandhahar.

  5. Vasanthakumar Says:

    Mr. Jayabharat,
I know little bit of religion also.

RAVANA is a pure brahmin .Don’t associate with DMK.
RAVANA is born between a BRAHMIN RISHI and with So called “Demonness”. By Hindu tradition Father’s religion/caste is associated with child also.

Dr. Venki(Great guy) married to Irish woman not a iyengar (you can check with venki)

  6. Vasanthakumar Says:

    Mr. Jayabharat,

I am neither a supporter or sympathiser or a party man of DMK.

    In fact i despise politics.

But let me put some facts.
    1. Dayanidi maran married to N.Ram’s relative .(Brahmin connection).
    2. Stalin’s primary adviser is a brahmin (Check it out).

    3. Only Durining DMK period Kanchi Guru got a reprievement from all cases.

I think you are very clear now.

  7. mohan Says:

Ramakrishanan belongs to Iyer community like CV raman and his relative chandra sheker . But Ramanujam who deserved Nobel as pointed out in the article published here by Amulya Ganguly in Thain indian belongs to Iyengar community.

  8. Jay Bharat Says:

    1. Who married whom, why etc is IRRRELEANT to this discussion as also who is in this sub caste or that.
    2. This above post by Mohan, further confirms the FACT that ALL Nobel preze winners and would be winners from TN and perhaps all of India have been Brahmins. But the ruling Hitlers are hell bent to drive them out of India at any cost to our country.
    3. I Agree Jews form a majority of Nobel(not NOBLE!) Prize winners.
Fifty years ago Hitler drove them out of Germanyor sent them to Gas Chambers, for no fault of theirs, and Germany lost it. Similarly Brahmins are even as we speak, being driven out of TN and India ( an enormous gain for USA/UK..).
    4. Santakumar (a good sanskrit name) you are so correct in asserting that Sanskrit was BORN in KANDHAHAR(!) in PAKISTAN!! Is that why millions of Pakistanis are giving their children names like Santakumar or Santikumaris and millions more are speaking in that language.
    Good luck Santakumar!

  9. Vasanthakumar Says:

    Mr.Jayabharat,

    1. You have started the discussion on politics for this news item. Dr.Venki on his own he went to gujarat and to US now in cambridge. (Why you are inserting DMK in this, To bash DMK it was done here even though DMK promoter are internally has lot of advisers mostly with so called Brahmins).

    2. Great people are know by their work not by religious, nationalistic and with narrow groups in which mediocre people associate with themselves.
( All Nobel winners except peace awards are Noble people and interchanging el with le is nothing wrong).

    4. From Afghanistan to Thailand every body had sanskrit name. spreading of islam many changed to arabic name).

My assertion is largely correct on Sanskrit even though it is irrelevance here. Classical Sanskrit is born with bahini who born in Kandahar which is in Afghanistan. Kindly refer Noam Chomsky( Einstein of Linguistics) on this.

  10. Manoj Says:

The point that should be understood here is that there is lot of anti bharaminism in Tamil Nadu . With their twisted ideology of Dravidaism they have their decendents everywhere even here in this form who has hardly understood what is being told here . Bhramins are known for their dicipline and thats why they succeed in every walk of life . Most of the others bost of courage and strength when pitted aganist bhramins but hardly come forward in the need of hour . Most of the wars with Afgans were fought by Bhramins when you ppl where shiting your pants at home . Remember Marathas , Hemu @#$@

  11. Manoj Says:

99 percent of Bhramins are pure hearted , Well educated , well behaved . Try to respect them at least thats the most you can do
