showAug 13, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Sky-gazers across the world were bestowed with a spectacular opportunity to witness the biggest celestial display of the year as the annual Perseids meteor shower made its presence felt in a dazzling manner in the skyline. A new moon as well a cloud-free sky on Thursday night ensured that unlike last year, this time around the amateur astronomers would hardly have anything much to complain about as the fascinating display of shooting stars left them asking for more.

The Perseids meteor shower is a celestial display that takes place each year sometime in the month of August as Earth makes it way through the debris that is left behind by the Comet Swift-Tuttle. This annual phenomenon is eagerly waited by sky-gazers all across the globe and this year, the anticipation was all the high as Met officials had predicted clear skies which made sure that visibility would not been hindered. This year the Perseids meteor shower peaked up at around 11 pm last night with the visibility being the highest along the countryside away from the city lights where the onlookers were able to see a shooting star once in almost every half a second.

Meanwhile, all those who were able to catch the spectacular celestial show on Thursday night have been sharing their experience with the help of Twitter Meteorwatch, an initiative that has been supported by Royal Astronomical Society as well as the British Astronomical Association (BAA). However, for those who were unable to catch a glimpse of the dazzling meteor shower last night should not be disappointed as the stunning array of shooting stars is likely to be visible again tonight.
