Cat with a pair of prosthetic paws June 28, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Oscar, the cat, has become the first of his species in the world to get prosthetic paws. Just nine months back, the cat was struggling for life after a terrible accident. The 2 1/2-year-old-cat lost both his back paws in the accident. His owners had taken him to their local veterinarian.

But now, the black cat has become a celebrity after a pioneering surgery in London by veterinary surgeon Noel Fitzpatrick. The cat is going to appear as a star in The Bionic Vet, a British TV show.

The 40 year old Fitzpatrick tries to save various animals by using cutting edge technology. In the first show, it will be shown how the back paws of the cat were cut off by a cutter in a field near his home.

Oscar lost huge blood and remained almost unconscious. Dr. Noel Fitzpatrick and other two biomedical engineers fused the artificial paws to the bone and skin of the cat to give it a normal life. Now, it can do all the things like his fellow cats.

They used cells to allow the cat’s skin to develop over the tip of the peg where the paws used to be. The metallic pegs link the ankles to new prosthetic feet. Initially, the doctors covered the brown implants with black tape to match the fur of the cat.

Oscar then went through a rehabilitation training to learn walking again. Within four months, he was back running on four legs.

The technology has definitely increased hope among the animal lovers, who can now see their pets running like before after such accidents.
