Olympic flame ‘to be fired into space’
February 24th, 2011 - 11:15 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattMoscow, Feb 24 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Olympic flame may travel to space if a proposal is accepted.
Russia was awarded the 2014 Winter Olympics to the surprise of many people. As it is with the Olympic tradition, the torch must travel through the entire world before reaching the host city which in this case is Sochi.
Russia wants to move a step further. They are considering a suggestion that the flame should be sent to space. If that is done it would be the first time that the flame would leave the planet. The idea might sound laudable but there is a challenge.
Open flame is not allowed into spacecrafts. The deputy head of Russian Space Agency, Vitaly Davydov, announced that before the flame could be taken into the spacecraft further studies will be necessary.
He however assured that theoretically, the proposal is possible. The International Space Agency is manned by astronauts from Russia, United States and other major countries.
Russia would have to come up with about $31 billion to host the games. The country would also need a similar amount when they host the 2018 FIFA World Cup which they were surprisingly awarded last year.
