Now, a pro-Kundankulam rally
November 11th, 2011 - 7:22 pm ICT by IANSChennai, Nov 11 (IANS) Even as the anti-Kudankulam nuclear plant protest entered its 25th day Friday, a pro-Kudankulam rally was called by Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) near Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu.
“Congressmen are also participating in the rally and we expect around 3,000 people in support of the nuclear plant,” Congress MP representing Tirunelveli constituency told IANS.
Meanwhile, around 6,000 people gathered at Chettikulam village and sat on a one-day token fast while the villagers of Idinthakarai observed the relay fast for 25th day, M. Pushparayan, member of the state committee of People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy, told IANS.
He said the fishermen in the district abstained from going into the sea in view of the protest at Chettikulam.
According to Pushparayan, the protest at Chettikulam was only for Friday.
Over 100 anti-nuclear power activists reached Kudankulam from Madurai Thursday night and joined the protestors against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP).
Several noted anti-nuclear personalities addressed the people gathered at Chettikulam and Idinthakarai, saying there were several safer ways of generating power than taking atomic route.
India’s nuclear power plant operator Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) is building two 1,000 MW nuclear power reactors with Russian technology and equipment in Kudankulam, around 650 km from here.
