Arlington, Virginia, Aug 16, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new species of the titi monkey has been discovered by scientists in the Colombian jungle. The species of titi monkeys which is known as Callicebus caquetensis, is as small as a house cat and it is the fourth category of titi monkeys which inhabits the South American nation’s southern forest. Despite the fact that the existence of the newly-discovered species of titi monkeys was speculated by the researchers, any concrete evidence could not be gathered as the area reels under the onslaught of insurgency for years now which prevented scientists from visiting the region.
While reacting to the discovery of the new species of monkey, Professor Thomas Defler who is associated with Washington D.C. based Conservation International stated that the discovery was indeed significant as for years the existence of this animal was being speculated but there had not been any confirmation about whether these creatures were any different from the other titi monkeys. The researcher further went on to say that the discovery highlights the rich diversity of life that is present in the Amazon, waiting to be discovered.
The new species of the titi monkeys was found after Caqueta native Javier Garcia, who is also a research student carried out an extensive survey of the region which enabled him to come across as many as 13 new populations of the Caqueta titi monkeys. However, the researchers have also raised concerns that the survival of the newly-discovered titi monkey species is threatened and chances are high that they would become extinct in the near future owing to the widespread deforestation that the region is witnessing for quite some time now.
