New ocean being formed in Ethiopia
June 29th, 2010 - 2:23 am ICT by Aishwarya Bhatt ( Leave a comment )Afar, Jun 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Scientists of the Royal Society have said that Africa and specifically Ethiopia, is all set to see a new ocean that is being formed there.
The geologists who were studying and researching the Afar region, which is located in Ethiopia, said that the new ocean would lead to an eventual split of the African continent. However the Africans needn’t be that worried because it would take another 10 million years to happen.
The lead researcher of the study is Tim Wright, and he used the term ‘truly incredible’ to describe the whole process of the creation of the ocean. He is no stranger to Africa, as he has seen numerous changes in the region in the last five years.
According to the BBC World Service, Dr James Hammond, who is a seismologist from the University of Bristol said that, “Eventually this will drift apart. The sea will flood in and will start to create this new ocean. It will pull apart, sink down deeper and deeper and eventually… parts of southern Ethiopia, Somalia will drift off, create a new island, and we’ll have a smaller Africa and a very big island that floats out into the Indian Ocean.”
