Navy to help save tsunami buoys
August 4th, 2011 - 10:06 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 4 (IANS) The help of the Indian Navy has been sought to protect tsunami buoys which are being increasingly vandalized, Minister of State for Earth Sciences Ashwani Kumar said Thursday.
The minister told the Lok Sabha that maintaining the tsunami warning systems in the sea was “highly challenging” because of vandalism, theft and inadvertent damage by passing vessels.
“The non-functional moorings are attended by maintenance support teams with necessary spares and sensors are replaced and serviced in open sea,” he said.
The minister said the assistance of the Indian Navy had been sought to safeguard the tsunami warning equipment.
