Washington, Mar 16, (THAINDIAN NEWS) In what has come as a rather startling revelation, NASA scientists were in for a real shock when they found a shrimp like creature and a jelly fish under a sheet of Antarctic ice. Although scientists believed that no creature could survive in the subfreezing temperatures apart from few microbes, they were in for a huge surprise when a shrimp like creature crawled up the cable of a camera.
It has been reported that the creature was not actually a shrimp but in reality is a Lyssianasid amphipod, which is related to a shrimp and looks quite similar to it. The discovery was awaiting the NASA scientists when while studying the subfreezing Antarctic water, they dropped a video camera in a bid to get a more comprehensive idea about the underbelly of Antarctica. However, the scientists were in for more surprising revelations than they had anticipated as the creature swam up and lodged itself on the cable of the camera. At the same time, the researchers also dragged up a tentacle that supposedly belonged to a jellyfish.
Meanwhile, NASA ice scientist Robert Bindschadler divulged that his team was carrying out the operation with presumption that no life could exist beneath the ice sheet. The findings of the study and the video would be presented at the American Geophysical Union meeting on Wednesday. Moreover, it is also being presumed that the findings would raise questions about how much the scientists actually know about the existence of life under unfavorable conditions. However, scientists are not ruling out the possibility that the creature might not actually lived there but might have swum into the place from a far away region.
