cr-1July 12, (THAINDIAN NEWS) NASA has discovered giant propeller-shaped structures in the rings of Saturn and the NASA officials suggest that the propellers are created by a new class of hidden moon. The announcement made by NASA on last Thursday, July 8, 2010 left every space scientists wondering about the whole issue. The Cassini spacecraft of NASA spotted the distinctive structures inside some of Saturn’s rings,

Carolyn Porco, one of the lead researchers on the Cassini imaging team based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo. said that observing the motions of those disk embedded objects has provided them a rare opportunity to gauge how the planets grew from and interacted with, the disk of material surrounding the “early sun”. He also added that it allowed them a glimpse into how the solar system ended up looking the way “it does”. The pictures show some huge structures several thousands of miles long and the details of their discovery are penned down in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters issued on July 8, 2010.

The Cassini scientists spotted double armed propeller structures back in 2006 on “propeller-belt” in the A ring of Saturn. However, they claim that these propellers are much bigger than the last discovery. NASA described that propellers are actually gaps in the ring material created by new class of objects called moonlets which are smaller than known moons but larger than the particles making up Saturn’s rings. Hence, with this new study researchers have found a multitude of larger and rarer moons in a separate part of a ring of Saturn. The study was led by Cassini imaging team associate Matthew Tiscareno at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
