More CCTV cameras coming up in Mumbai
May 27th, 2011 - 9:35 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, May 27 (IANS) Keeping the promise of making his constituency crime free, Maharashtra legislator Krishna Hegde from suburban Vile Parle is all set to inaugurate five new close circuit television (CCTV) cameras at strategic locations.
Hegde had installed six CCTV cameras early this year on the state highway to help the police.
“The six cameras are equivalent to 22 policemen in terms of monitoring the activities on the highway,” Hegde said.
“These cameras can rotate 360 degrees, have night vision facility, can record footage for six months and can zoom in up to 750 metres,” he added.
Hegde said that five new CCTV cameras will be put up at strategic locations like crowded market places to track crimes like burglary and hit-and-run cases.
Congress MP Priya Dutt also had 70 such cameras set up at several locations in the suburbs of Santacruz, Khar and Bandra in Mumbai.
While these cameras were funded through Dutt’s MP local area development scheme (MPLADS) fund, the cameras in Vile Parle were funded through private sponsorships.
Following the success of these CCTV installations, the state government has now made a provision to install 5,000 such cameras in the metro with an objective to make the city crime free.
“I am also planning to install 40 more cameras in my constituency next year. I have spoken to local industrialists to sponsor additional cameras covering both the domestic and international airports, all major roads, market places, schools and colleges,” Hegde said.
According to him, these cameras will be linked to the monitoring screen at prominent police stations through local cables.
