New York, Jan 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Scientists were baffled as to why the levels of the white ibises were going down. As a result, researchers from United States and Sri Lanka set out to investigate the cause of the dwindling numbers.

When the researchers investigated, they realized that it was rather the birds that were not reproducing. They were not reproducing not because the female birds had lowered fertility but it was because the male were going after the male birds. This action got the scientists curious and subsequently further studies were carried out.

They found out during the investigation that when mercury gets into the system of the birds, they turn homosexuals. The reported that the higher the level of mercury that was contained in the system of the birds, the higher the potential of the bird becoming a homosexual.

The researchers admitted that when they set out to investigate the effect that mercury have on the birds, they didn’t expect to find the behavior that they did though he admitted that they knew the metal lowered the testosterone levels of the birds.

The study was led by Dr Peter Frederick from the University of Florida.
