Mars Sighting Hoax Recycling Once Again

marsA recent spur in web activities has seen an email going around that states that Mars is supposedly going to be real close to our home, and that the planet Earth and will look almost as big as our moon (that is, visible to the naked eye).

A news that is sure enough to get most of us (almost all of us have at some point in our childhood dreamed of being a space trotter) quite over the top and excited, considering the fact that the email and circulating news also suggests that it is once in a lifetime experience. Is it for real?

Well, sadly, it is never going to be that sort of “once in a lifetime” experience ever. This is just a part of an old recurring Internet hoax that has gone round periodically for quite a while. Every two or three years it seems to be back on its feet. The hoax (quite like the celebrity death hoax that has turned to be quite a menace well over the recent months) had first originated online in the year 2003 and then repeated its appearance in 2005 again.

What the rumor states is that the planet Mars, Earth’s closest neighbor, is going to be very close to our abode (as close as earth’s satellite) on the 27th of August, 2009, so that a sighting with the naked eye is going to be possible. However, if that was ever to happen, it would spell the end for the existence of life on earth. In its wake, Mars’ approach would have given rise to such catastrophic events like sky high tidal waves and major upheavals elsewhere, that all life would have perished on Earth. For now, we have nothing to fear of such an catastrophe to befall us anytime soon.
