For serving the task of distant viewing, scientists have come up with the latest, biggest and the most advanced telescope of the world made till date, known as The Gran Telescope Canarias. Prior to its creation, only 5 percent of the universe was understandable. It will be soon used for its first peak in the universe at the Canary islands in Spain. Until now, only Jupiter was found without the use of it. With its help astronomers can reach out for Neptune and other distant planets. This 10.4 m reflecting high- performance instrument will start working by the end of 2009. The telescope is a mammoth creation and has taken astronomers and scientists seven whole years to make it. Initiated by the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias was made in partnership of the several institutions from Spain, Mexico and the University of Florida.
Friday it will be run for a test that will involve the heir of the Spanish throne, prince Felipe in a ceremonial observation besides a few hundred Canary island residents. It is a wonder that covers the wavelength ranging from 0.365 to 1.05m that will give distant pictures of the space with much clarity.
Ford said “the excellent site and the large site of the GTC plus the unique filtering capabilities of its detectors will allow the astronomers to minimize the effect of the earth’s atmosphere. By repeatedly measuring the colour of the exoplanets’ host stars, astronomers can study the atmosphere of the exoplanets.” With such invention it seems that space exploration will not be as difficult a task as it used to be.
