Kerala to host global conference on Raman spectroscopyFebruary 21st, 2008 - 6:58 pm ICT by admin
Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 21 (IANS) An international conference on “Perspectives in Vibrational Spectroscopy” will be held here next week, drawing in a galaxy of participating scientists from various countries. The scientists will be speaking on recent developments in Raman spectroscopy, named after India’s physicist Nobel laureate C.V. Raman eight decades back.
Raman spectroscopy is a spectroscopic technique used in condensed matter physics and chemistry to study vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency modes.
“This conference seeks to provide a global platform for the research community in Raman spectroscopy to discuss the recent developments in the field,” said Prof. V.S. Jayakumar, convenor of the five-day meet beginning Feb 24.
Raman spectroscopy has now become a highly sophisticated research field as it is versatile and is a tool for advanced studies in areas of new materials, molecular dynamics, space exploration and several other areas.
Raman won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1930 for his work on the scattering of light and for the discovery of the Raman effect named after him. The Raman Effect occurs when light impinges upon a molecule and interacts with the electron cloud of the bonds of that molecule.
“While a lot of research is on elsewhere, in India it is not happening to that extent. Hence it is highly desirable at this time to initiate advanced research in the country. The conference would see international experts in the field presenting papers,” Jayakumar told reporters Thursday.
The leading scientists participating in the conference include Janos Mink from Hungary, Martina Havenith of Germany, O.F. Neilsen of Denmark, Ewan Blanch of England and Paul Heng from Singapore.
The conference is being jointly organised by the Physics Department of Mar Ivanios College and Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment.
