Is radioactive fish a cause for worry?

Montpelier, Jun 1 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Fishes containing the radioactive isotope strontium-90 have been found in the Connecticut River. Some environmentalists blame the radioactive fish on the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in Vermont. Officials of the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant announced in January, that there was a nuclear tritium leak at the plant. After the leak, the river water was tested and it was found that the fishes have tested positive for the radioactive isotope.
However radiological health chief, William Irwin, does not believe the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant is responsible for the strontium-90 radioactive, which has led to the radioactive fishes. The health chief said he suspected that the isotope might be due to the nuclear weapons testing which took place in the 1950’s and the 1960’s. Irwin believes the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, might also be the reason why the fishes are contaminated.
Earlier this year, the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant officials had announced that radioactive substances like tritium and other substances have been accidentally leaked. The health department therefore set out to do sample testing of the water, soil and other entities. However the full results of the testing are not known as yet. Irwin also added that his department isn’t bothered about the radioactive fishes, as they have other important issues to worry about, in the aftermath of the tritium leak.
