Facebook Thiruvananthapuram, April 4 (IANS) Technopark based start-up company Innoz Technologies has bagged the prestigious MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) award for telecommunication at the MIT Technology Review EmTech India Conclave in Banaglore.

Innoz received the award for SMSGyan, a mobile based search engine that can work with different internet resources to give correct answers - on verticals such as encyclopaedias, dictionaries, cricket scores, stock market and weather information.

With more than 10 million users, SMSGyan has become one of the fastest growing mobile services in India.

“Sixty percent of India does not even know what Google is because internet and computer penetration is so low. On the other hand, with 771 million subscribers, more than half of India owns a mobile. Growth opportunities for a service like SMSGyan are huge because now the information is just an SMS away,” an MIT statement said about Innoz’s product.

Airtel has recently joined hands with Innoz to launch AirtelGyan accessible to over 150 million customers in India. Customers can use the service by sending questions to 55444.

“MIT clearly gives us a strong belief that we can also build international companies from India. The recognition shows the importance that digital economy is the domain of younger generation who quickly adopt new technologies,” said Deepak Ravindran, chief executive officer of Innoz Technologies.

The dream of producing technology success stories such as Microsoft, Google and Facebook from India is never too far, he added.

Innoz, started by a group of engineering students from Kerala in 2008, is one of the fastest growing technology companies in the country which works on mobile and web applications.

The flagship product SMSGyan was developed while Ravindran and his college mates were final semester engineering students.
