katlaReykjavik, Iceland, Mar 23, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Scientists are still keeping a close watch on the volcano that had erupted in Iceland. The volcano had erupted on Mar 21, in the area near the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland, which is the fifth largest glacier in the country. The eruption was one of the rare eruptions in that part of the world, and that particular volcano had erupted after having remained dormant for over a period of almost two hundred years. The eruption had given rise to fears that it might be creating a fissure in the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, thus leading to widespread flooding of the adjacent areas.

However, any such fear was quelled after it was found that the volcano had erupted not underneath the glacier, as was being assumed at first, but a little distance away from it. The eruption itself had been a minor one, but emergency precautions had been taken. About 450 residents of the area had been evacuated, and flights to and from the country had been stopped for the time being. Moreover, scientists are also monitoring the Katla volcano in case there is any further volcanic activity, since it is considered to be one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the country.

Scientists monitoring the Katla volcano reported that the small scale eruption in Iceland might lead to further eruption in the Katla volcano. It is being considered that an eruption in the Katla volcano might have a much more widespread impact. So far, three such eruptions have taken place in the Katla after volcanic activity took place in the Eyjafjallajokull glacier.
